Become a company lawyer
To become a company lawyer (an IBJ-IJE member) you must fulfil the following conditions:
  • hold a licentiate degree, a Master’s degree or a doctorate in law or in notarial law, issued by a Belgian university or an equivalent foreign degree;
  • be bound by an employment contract or statute to an employer that carries out an economic, social, administrative or scientific activity in Belgium, in the public or private sector. This employer is a company, an association of companies, or an entity with legal personality;*
  • provide studies and consultations, draft legal documents, provide advice on the ascertainment of legal position and provide legal assistance for the benefit of this employer, its affiliated companies or institutions, its associations or their members;
  • have mainly legal responsibilities;
  • exercise your profession in complete intellectual independence.
* Exception: since 1 June 2023, as an exception to the condition of being bound by an employment contract or statute to an employer, membership of the Institute may also be conferred on a natural person who is a member of the management body of a legal entity if the law prohibits this member from exercising this management mandate by means of an employment contract.
